Why Plastic Recycling Will Not Save the World Without Circular Design

Why recycling alone is not enough and how circular design helps create products that can be repaired and used for longer.

It may sound unusual coming from a company that makes furniture from recycled plastic, but recycling alone will not solve the waste problem.f we continue creating products designed for a single season, difficult to repair, and unsuitable for reuse, a recycling facility will only delay the moment when they become waste again.Real change begins earlier — at the design stage. This is where decisions are made about how many materials a product will contain, how they will be connected, whether a damaged part can be replaced, and what will happen to the product after its useful life ends.
What Circular Design Means
Circular design does not view a product as a straight line of “make — use — discard.” Instead, it treats the product as part of a system.The material should retain its value for as long as possible, while the product should be able to return to a cycle of repair, refurbishment, reuse, or recycling.
Five Decisions That Determine a Product’s Future• Fewer different materials. The more difficult it is to separate components, the harder it becomes to return them to a new cycle.• Disassemblable connections. A screw or another accessible fastener is often more useful than a permanently bonded adhesive joint.• Replaceable parts. A damaged slat should not mean disposing of the entire bench.• Clear material origin. Labelling and a material passport help make better decisions during repairs and at the end of the product’s service life.• A return plan. The manufacturer or customer should understand in advance where the product will go after use.
Why the Customer Also Influences Design
Customers shape the market through their technical requirements.If procurement focuses only on the lowest initial price, manufacturers have little incentive to design for repairability or material take-back.But when the requirements include service life, replaceable components, maintenance conditions, and an end-of-life plan, the product itself begins to change.Recycled Material Is the Beginning, Not the EndUsing recycled raw materials is important, but it does not automatically answer every question.How long will the product last? Can it be repaired? Does it contain unnecessary components?
